Millions of social media users worldwide were surprised to find themselves locked out of their Facebook accounts this morning.

Many were greeted by a message explaining that the platforms were down for maintenance, while others worried about potential security issues.

Reports of the outage quickly surfaced as users flagged problems accessing their accounts.

However, Instagram users did not report disruptions such as failing to load posts or send messages.
