Following serious concerns regarding the high number of accidents and a death at the Wainibuku roundabout in 9 miles, the Fiji Roads Authority says it is a black spot for them as it is not built to standard and there are plans in place to remove it.
This comes as concerns were raised by members of the public during a public consultation in Nakasi on traffic along the Suva-Nausori corridor.
Nakasi resident Shom Jeet says he was almost involved in an accident with a truck when he attempted to make a right turn into Naivorovoro.
He had indicated his intention, but a speeding truck passed him just before he could turn.
Jeet says the matter was reported to the police where the truck driver admitted he did not know there was a roundabout.
The resident suggests that a proper light installation be done.
Jeet also raised concerns about the lack of footpaths and street lights along Naivorovoro.
He says a few people have also been robbed long the road.
Jeet says with the development of a church, a children's park and a preschool in the areas, they also request a barrier or hump be installed at the entrance of Naivorovoro as is currently placed on the other end of the road.
While speaking about wasted money, he says there are three electricity poles in the middle of the cycle lane from Mobil Service Station in Nakasi to Lelean.
Jeet says this is poor design and engineering and relocating the post and reconstructing the path is a waste of taxpayers' money.
While responding to Jeet, FRA’s Manager Traffic and Road Safety Peni Tuinona says they have received several complaints through service request from FRA and they have even received letters from Fiji Police.
He says they have recorded 25 accidents where one person passed away and 13 people were hospitalised between 2000 to 2023 at the intersection.
He says providing traffic lights are in the pipeline and has been programmed to happen in the next financial year.
Tuinona says all parts and material has been acquired but for the time being, to get rid of accidents, they have to get rid of the problem and the roundabout has to be removed.
Tuinona says this is the reason they had increased the size of the roundabout in Nabua as they were taken to court because it was substandard.
He says if one has to go to Nakasi, they will have to go through the Nakasi roundabout near GMR.
He says they are ready to implement the changes but they await the Ministry’s approval following consultations.
Meanwhile, Fiji Roads Authority Acting General Manager Taufa Vakamino says they have taken note of his request for street lights, footpath and other concerns and will ensure it is part of their forward looking plans.
