As Fiji prepares to celebrate its 55th Independence Day, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission is urging shoppers to stay alert during the Fiji Day sales period.
While festive discounts can offer great deals, the FCCC warns that unethical traders may try to take advantage of consumers through misleading prices, expired goods, or false advertising.
FCCC Chief Executive Officer Senikavika Jiuta says the Commission has intensified enforcement and monitoring to safeguard consumer rights during this busy shopping season.
Jiuta says the teams are on the ground inspecting retailers, checking price tags, and cracking down on unfair practices.
She adds that they are also ensuring expiry dates are visible and advertisements are not misleading.
She adds that surveillance extends beyond food products to include clothing, white goods, and other retail items.
The FCCC is also collaborating with municipal councils and health inspectors to ensure the safety of food products in supermarkets.
To prevent consumers from being misled, the Commission will monitor advertisements to stop false claims and bait marketing tactics.
