The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission is issuing a public warning after observing the persistent and evolving nature of scam tactics targeting Fijians.
CEO Senikavika Jiuta says as part of FCCC’s active monitoring for emerging threats to alert the public, ensuring widespread awareness of new scam methodologies, schemes operating in Fiji have been identified which employ advanced tactics such as fake verification badges or impersonating well-known brands to deceive unsuspecting individuals.
She says to combat these deceptive practices, they are urging all individuals, especially those with public platforms, to exercise extreme caution and vigilance.
Jiuta says they strongly advise verifying any potential partnership by contacting brands directly through their official channels before responding to any offers.
She says it is also important to research thoroughly by checking the brand’s official website, reviewing their previous campaigns and seeking independent reviews to confirm their authenticity.
The CEO says these scams are particularly concerning as they exploit the genuine ambitions of local content creators and everyday citizens, which in turn breaks trust in digital channels and undermines overall consumer confidence.
The CEO says FCCC and the National Anti-Scam Taskforce actively work together to combat the proliferation of online scams, protect consumers from financial fraud and enhance public awareness of evolving deceptive tactics.
She stresses that people must remain highly vigilant and adds that your ability to recognize these deceptive tactics is paramount to safeguarding your finances and personal information.
