The Ministry of Health has acknowledged the ongoing staff shortages in public health facilities, however, critical cases are always prioritised.

While responding to concerns raised by fijivillage News, Minister for Health, Doctor Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, confirmed that while staff shortage remains a challenge, each facility is responsible for managing its staff and daily operations to ensure critical cases are prioritised.

He says the shortage of staff continues to impact daily operations as patient numbers surge due to flu-like illnesses and acute febrile (fever) illness.

Ratu Atonio says the burden is on the respective facility to plan their daily activities and roster, bearing in mind that the triage system still applies and that the very sick are given priority as always.

He further stated that the staffing crisis has raised concerns among patients, some of whom report long waiting times at hospitals and clinics.

Ratu Atonio says medical professionals have also voiced the need for more recruitment and resources to cope with rising demands.

Despite these challenges, the Ministry maintains that it is working to improve healthcare services and minimize disruptions.

The Minister for Health is urging members of the public to seek early medical attention, practice good hygiene, and take preventive measures to reduce the spread of illnesses and ease the burden on the healthcare system.
