Concerns have been raised after photos and videos of the discolouration in the water in the Walu Bay area started circulating on social media.

Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, Sakiusa Tubuna has confirmed to fijivillage News that a shipping company had a spill in one of their containers and the Ministry of Environment is looking into it.

He says the Ministry is conducting tests along the creek and in the sea around the area to ensure there is minimal effect on the environment.

The Assistant Minister further says at the same time they are trying to tell commercial companies to ensure that they have adequate procedures on how they dispose of materials ensuring that they do not pollute the environment.

Tubuna says the shipping company will be penalized but there are certain processes and procedures to be followed first.

fijivillage News has sent questions to the shipping company.
