The National Environment Council has convened today with a renewed sense of purpose to strengthen oversight, coordination, and policy guidance on environmental management in Fiji.
While opening the session, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Doctor Sivendra Michael says this marks the first full meeting of the Council since December 2021.
He acknowledged the long absence, saying that there is no one to blame, but this gap has been very significant.
The Permanent Secretary says during this time, Fiji has faced numerous environmental challenges, but efforts were made to maintain momentum.
He emphasized that the Council is not just another community, but the highest national platform for oversight, coordination and policy guidance on environmental management.
Dr Micheal says that today's meeting is not just procedural but a chance to reset, to re-establish the rhythm of their work and to send a very clear signal that the National Environmental Council is active, committed and leading the change people want to see.
He says the session will focus on oversight of technical committees, marine protected areas, the Environment Trust Fund, and key environmental policies.
