In an effort to enhance employment opportunities for all Fijians, the Ministry of Employment is spearheading the review of Fiji’s National Employment Policy.

The Ministry says this is being carried out by the tripartite partners with technical assistance provided by the International Labour Organisation.

Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh says the 9 Policy Priority Areas in the draft revised policy are cross-cutting through all government ministries and agencies from working conditions, education and skills development, entrepreneurship, empowerment of vulnerable groups, labour migration, climate resilience, resource-based employment diversification, digitization, and labor market information system.

Singh says the revised policy needs to align with the recently launched National Development Plan.

ILO Director for the Pacific, Martin Wandera says the policy in review not only aims to address current employment challenges but also seeks to align with the broader goals for sustainable development, Fiji’s NDP and Vision 2030, by fostering a resilient workforce that can contribute to the economic growth of Fiji while ensuring the environmental sustainability and social equity.

He says they must consider the impact of technological advancements and changing labour market dynamics, which will serve as a framework to adapt to these changes, ensuring that the labour force in Fiji is equipped with the necessary skills and competencies to thrive in a rapidly evolving job landscape.

While acknowledging ILO Office for the Pacific, Singh says through consultation and support, they will ensure that the policy is inclusive and sound and addresses the needs of all stakeholders involved in the labour market.
