A 71-year-old man who raped and indecently assaulted his 13-year-old grand-niece in Naitasiri has been sentenced to 12 years and 9 months imprisonment.

The man had pleaded to three counts of rape and one count of indecent assault and the incidents had happened between 2018 and 2019.

While sentencing the man, Judge, Justice Riyaz Hamza says there was a significant degree of planning involved on the man’s part in committing these offences.

The Judge says on multiple occasions the man would wait for the girl to make her way back home from school and then call her to the cassava patch where he committed the offences.

A non-parole period of 7 years and 9 months has been set.
