Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has reiterated that the Ministry will stand by the law when it comes to the discussion of reintroducing corporal punishment in schools.
With students’ deteriorating behaviour on the rise nowadays, the Fijian Teachers Association called on the Government to consider reintroducing corporal punishment as a disciplinary measure.
When questioned on the Ministry’s stance, Radrodro stressed that under the current law, corporal punishment is prohibited.
He says this is an issue that has been continuously discussed and raised, and the Ministry is also engaging with inter-ministerial agencies to further clarify the current position.
When asked what the Ministry is doing to address disciplinary issues in schools, the Minister urged parents and guardians to step up in their roles, saying the Ministry cannot do it alone.
He says a holistic approach is needed to ensure every child receives proper care and quality education.
