Health Minister, Doctor Ifereimi Waqainabete

A doctor who was working through the night at a public hospital in the Western Division was allegedly assaulted just before 8am today by a patient's relative.

Health Minister, Doctor Ifereimi Waqainabete says the young doctor was attending to an emergency case and was then walking over to attend the patient when the patient's relative assaulted the doctor.

The doctor fell down however he stood up, attended to the patient who is stable before receiving medical treatment.

Doctor Waqainabete says the matter has been reported to the Police.

The doctor is also stable and at home on bed rest.

Doctor Waqainabete says health professionals must not be assaulted whether physically or verbally because just like the Fiji Sevens Team; when they are relaxed and loved, they are at their best.

The Health Minister says the public is more than welcome to contact their complaints line 157 or email him on waqainabete@govnet.gov.fj or the Permanent Secretary for Health on james.fong@govnet.gov.fj if they are unhappy about the health system or how they have been treated.
