Disability discrimination is a fundamental betrayal of our nation's commitment - FTUC

Disability discrimination is a fundamental betrayal of our nation's commitment to human rights.

The Fiji Trades Union Congress shared this during the workshop on Labour Rights and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Fiji.

FTUC says to exclude persons with disabilities from the workplace is not just unfair, it is a loss of talent and potential to the business, the country, and the economy.

They say Fiji has laid a strong foundation, having rights to disability acts that guarantee labour rights intentions that are ratified by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities.

FTUC says while they are ensuring the fundamental right to work is fully realized for all Fijians, regardless of ability, this is not just a policy issue but a moral imperative rooted in fairness.

They say the core value of the trade union is solidarity, and they believe every single worker deserves dignity, respect, and a fair chance at a decent job, regardless of who they are or what abilities they possess.

FTUC says they believe that creating a truly inclusive environment means fostering a culture of trust and psychological safety, ensuring workers feel able to disclose their needs without fear of losing their jobs or being judged.

The second day of the workshop is currently taking place at the Novotel Hotel in Lami.
