There has been a decrease in illegal logging in Fiji’s forests, especially in the Western Division.
This according to Divisional Forests Officer Asaeli Mata follows various mechanisms introduced by government to eliminate illegal logging.
Mata said in the past more than 10 cases of illegal logging were often reported, however, with mechanisms in place, numbers have come down to two cases so far.
Mata added according to reports from Fiji, Pine illegal logging was evident in many parts of the Ba highlands, with causes attributed to the offer of money.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama had in 2010 stated that logging companies and sawmills should be closed if they condoned illegal logging.
He said those caught breaching logging laws would have their licenses revoked.
