The entire community gathered at My Suva Park to celebrate International Mother Language Day, highlighting Fiji’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity through a special community race and cultural programme.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Suneet Mehta stressed that the celebration uniquely combined language and health through a run programme, showing that both are essential for a strong and vibrant society.

He emphasises that many languages are spoken in Fiji, including Fiji Hindi brought to the country 146 years ago by indentured labourers from India, these communities have proudly preserved and promoted their language and culture across generations.

He adds that in 2024, two Tamil teachers were brought from India to help revive the Tamil language in Labasa and Rakiraki, where it is now being taught in Sangam schools.

Mehta also highlights that Tamil Day was organised last year, describing it as a unique initiative adding shows that not only children from the Indian community, but also children from the iTaukei community are showing interest in learning the language.

Meanwhile, Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa says International Mother Language Day recognises the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity around the world.

He says bringing together health, culture and community spirit is not a small task, and the leadership shown in organising the event demonstrates what collaboration can achieve.

Ravunawa stresses the day reminds everyone that language is more than just communication — it carries identity, history and values.

He adds that mother tongues form the foundation of who we are, connecting generations and preserving traditions.

The Assistant Minister shares Fiji is blessed with rich cultural and linguistic diversity, and the Indo-Fijian community, through preserving Hindi and other Indian languages, continues to strengthen the nation’s identity.

He stresses that these languages are living expressions of resilience, heritage and contribution to national development, adding that Fiji’s diversity remains its greatest strength.
