Serua will soon welcome 25-year-old American volunteer Dashell, who was officially sworn in today as a Peace Corps volunteer.
She is part of the latest group of nine volunteers who completed their pre-service training and will now begin two years of service across Fiji.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Dashell says she is filled with excitement, anticipation, and deep gratitude as she prepares to settle into life in the interior village.
Dashell says she comes from Washington State, where she worked with the Department of Fish and Wildlife after studying business, economics, environmental science and sustainability.
Her work focused on outreach and education to support fish population preservation.
She says Fiji’s strong marine environment and the opportunities within its fisheries sector inspired her to choose the country for her Peace Corps posting.
She adds that after spending her entire life in the cool, rainy Pacific Northwest, “the rainiest corner of America”, she was also excited to finally experience warm, tropical weather.
Reflecting on her first weeks in Fiji, she spoke warmly about the hospitality and kindness she has encountered.
