UFC superstar Conor McGregor was arrested and later released without charge after being placed in police custody on the Mediterranean island of Corsica on suspicion of attempted sexual assault and indecent exposure.

McGregor was freed before the limit of police custody and faces no charges according to his legal representative on the French island Emmanuelle Ramon.

A spokesman for McGregor sent a statement from the United States saying he "vigorously denied any accusation of bad behaviour".

Earlier, the prosecutor's office in Bastia issued a statement saying they had received a complaint about McGregor.

The statement provided no other details about the alleged offences.

The Irishman vigorously denied the claims after he was held by French police following an incident in a bar.

The former Ultimate Fighting Championship star is vacationing on the French island with fiancee Dee Devlin and their two children.

He was held just hours before he was due to take part in a 130km water bike charity race from Corsica to Monaco as part of a joint campaign with Princess Charlene of Monaco to highlight water safety.

McGregor's arrest comes just days after the US anti-doping agency came to test him in Corsica despite the fact he has retired.
