As many will be indulging in sweets and snacks on the auspicious occasion of Diwali today, the Fiji College of General Practitioners is strongly reminding people to develop healthy eating habits, choose their food wisely, opt for plain water instead of juice, and eat plenty of local fruits.
While speaking to fijivillage News, Fiji College of General Practitioners President, Dr Dhirendra Lal, says one in three adults in Fiji are diabetic or pre-diabetic, and they have observed that many people are not coming forward to check their sugar and cholesterol levels, instead seeking medical help only after complications arise.
He says the government is also losing a lot of money to handle this complication.
Dr Lal stresses that Diwali is a joyful celebration of lights, but people tend to overindulge in sweets, sugary drinks, and heavy eating, while many men also consume excessive amounts of kava.
He is urging everyone to be mindful of their food and drink intake and to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to flush out the toxins.
When questioned about children’s eating habits during Diwali, Dr Lal says it is the parents’ responsibility to monitor their children’s diets and ensure balanced meals.
He is also urging strict supervision when using firecrackers, noting that carelessness has led to severe burns, loss of eyesight, and even deaths in the past.
Meanwhile, Laxmi Puja will be aired on Radio Sargam at 6.20pm today.
Govardhan Pooja and Bhai Duj will be celebrated tomorrow and Thursday respectively.
