Clayton McMillan to leave Chiefs for Munster at end of Super Rugby Pacific season

Chiefs coach Clayton McMillan is heading overseas at the end of this year’s Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season.

McMillan will take over as head coach of Irish club Munster, who have been searching for a replacement for Graham Rowntree since his departure in October.

The Chiefs made the bombshell announcement this morning.

McMillan, will be the first Kiwi coach to take charge at Munster since current Crusaders coach Rob Penney held the role for two years between 2012-14.

He says it has been an absolute privilege to work with the Gallagher Chiefs and NZ Rugby adding he is eternally grateful for the opportunities he has been afforded, and for the support of those he has worked alongside.

McMillan says the decision to leave was not easy as he loves his job, the people they represent, and what they value as a club.

He says he takes real comfort in knowing the team is in great hands moving forward, with a talented playing group, coaches and staff.

Chiefs CEO Simon Graafhuis says McMillan leaves with the blessing of everyone at the club.

Graafhuis says under McMillan’s guidance they have not only enjoyed success on the field, but he has also played a significant role in embedding a strong culture and values at the Chiefs Rugby Club.

The Chiefs won’t be looking to appoint McMillan’s successor until the end of the Super Rugby Pacific season.

The Chiefs currently sit atop the Super Rugby Pacific table after winning their first two matches.

They host the Brumbies at 3.35pm Saturday.

In other games, Moana Pasifika face the Highlanders at 6.05pm Friday, the Waratahs meet the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua at 8.35pm Friday, the Hurricanes face the Blues at 6.05pm Saturday, the Force meet the Reds at 8.35pm Saturday while the Crusaders are on a bye this week.
