The Leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Russell M. Nelson has died at the age of 101.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says that he passed away peacefully at his home in Salt Lake City last night.
The Church further says President Nelson, the oldest prophet in the Church’s history, was called as an Apostle in 1984 and became the 17th President in 2018.
The church notes that his presidency was marked by a global ministry, with travels to 32 countries, the historic building of temples, and the announcement of 200 new temples, as well as major changes to place Jesus Christ at the center of Church worship and service.
They highlighted that before his full-time Church service, President Nelson was an internationally respected heart surgeon.
The Church says that he performed Utah’s first open-heart surgery in 1955 and held leading roles in major medical associations.
They say he was also conversant in 11 languages.
The Church adds that his life leaves a legacy of faith, service, and devotion to both medicine and ministry.
