Do not be afraid to come to court and fight for your client.
This is the message delivered by Chief Justice Salesi Temo to the 24 newly admitted lawyers at the High Court in Suva today, as he reminded them of the responsibility, privilege, and courage required in the legal profession.
Chief Justice Temo told the new practitioners that their admission to the Bar marks the reward of years of sacrifice, discipline, and perseverance.
Chief Justice Temo says that earning a degree and being admitted to the Bar is “merely a privilege”, emphasising that their role extends far beyond the title of lawyer.
He says they are not only lawyers, but officers of the court.
He also stressed that with admission comes the authority to appear before the courts and access the powers entrusted to them by the High Court.
He also urged the young lawyers to acknowledge the sacrifices made by their parents.
Highlighting the qualities essential to the profession, Chief Justice Temo says the art of being a lawyer lies in listening, while courage and honesty must anchor their conduct.
He also cautioned that lawyers may face criticism, especially in the age of social media, but encouraged them to remain steadfast and urged the new admittees to continually refer to the Code of Ethics, describing it as the compass that will guide them through their legal careers.
