The Constitutional Offices Commission has endorsed the appointment of an independent selection panel to assess and shortlist applicants for the position of the Commissioner of Police on behalf of the Commission.

The Commission says it will thereafter consider the panel’s assessment report before making a recommendation for appointment to the President.

The Commission received 30 applications for the Commissioner of Police position of whom 4 were women.

Meanwhile the Commission confirms it is currently considering suitable persons for the position of Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, following the resignation of Barbara Malimali.

It says in accordance with section 75(6) of the Constitution, the Chairperson for the Electoral Commission is a person who is or is qualified to be a Judge.

The Commission adds in accordance with section 136 of the Constitution, the Commission has endorsed the recommendations of an Independent Committee, in relation to the remuneration and allowances for persons appointed to act in a constitutional office.
