For 15-year-old cousins Napolioni Buluvakaca and Rachel Tuidama, being awarded the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year at Gospel High School is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

The cousins have not only excelled in school-level sports but have also proudly represented Fiji in the Under-15 Basketball competition in Australia, marking a dream come true for these young athletes.

Speaking to fijivillage News, the cousins say they began their sports journey together, starting with basketball, which earned them a spot on the national Under-15 Fiji basketball team.

Napolioni says he also played in the Deans Trophy competition, where his team reached the semi-finals.

The cousins credit their achievements to a strong family influence, particularly their uncle, who encouraged them to pursue multiple sports.

They say their uncle has always told them to participate in as many sports as possible to achieve their goals.

They say their journey has not been without challenges.

The cousins say when no one is available to drive them to training, they walk 30 minutes each way to practice, but despite these struggles, their passion for sports keeps them motivated.

When asked about their future plans, Rachel says she aims to join the Under-17 Fiji Basketball team next year, while Napolioni focuses on advancing his rugby career and striving for national recognition.

They encouraged young people to stay focused on their dreams, work hard every day and not let challenges hold them back.

They say sports teach discipline and resilience, and if people love what they do, success will follow.
