Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

The Pharmacy Profession Amendment Bill to have all pharmacies and pharmacists certified annually by the Pharmaceutical Board will be debated on Thursday.

Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says pharmacists give out drugs and they must have a current license.

He says the pharmacy premises should be certified because it has to be kept under various sanitary and hygiene conditions.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the anomaly that exists is that there is one private hospital that has been given an outpatient pharmacy license, that has been given for an indefinite time.

He says that is not correct and it is unfair to the other existing pharmacies.

Sayed-Khaiyum adds that like every other pharmacy outlet, this private hospital pharmacy should also be brought into the one-year licensing regime.

He says that is what the bill seeks to amend.
