Winning the Youth Entrepreneur Award two years in a row is a proud and humbling moment for Balbir Singh, a leading figure in Fiji’s farming and agribusiness community.
Singh says the award is not just a personal honour, but a tribute to the tireless efforts and dedication of farmers across the country.
He acknowledged the vital role farmers play in driving the nation’s growth and strengthening its resilience.
Director and Founder of Futuristic Farms oversees a production capacity of over one million seedlings and runs 30 commercial nurseries nationwide, with the latest established in Tavua.
Reflecting on his journey, Singh shared that he started the business just four years ago.
Since then, it was affected by tropical cyclones and prolonged droughts, however, the venture has grown steadily and is now a key contributor to Fiji’s agriculture sector.
Singh is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Philosophy and aims to diversify into other sectors of the economy while continuing to grow his agricultural footprint.
Encouraging young people to take up farming, Singh highlighted its untapped financial potential.
He says someone in a white-collar job might earn $50,000 a year, or a teacher may earn between $20,000 to $30,000 annually but a dedicated farmer, running operations efficiently, can earn more than half a million dollars a year.
He adds that farming is not just a profession to be praised—it's a serious, lucrative career.
