The trial of the man who allegedly attempted to set fire to the Totogo Police Station in September last year has been deferred while the bail hearing is today.

The trial was to start yesterday however, it was deferred to discuss bail matters.

Sebastian Rakai who is charged with one count of attempt to commit arson, two counts of damaging property and one count of criminal intimidation was remanded at the Suva Remand Centre while Saint Giles Hospital would provide him with medical assistance.

DPP lawyer, Unaisi Tamanikaiyaroi while not objecting to bail told the court that his bail conditions should include supervision at home, a book to track his medication and police to check up on him.

Rakai’s lawyer, Ronald Singh says he is concerned every day Rakai spends in remand as it is not benefitting his health.

He says Rakai’s condition has worsened and his hair has been shaved.

Singh says the court was informed that he was previously assaulted while in remand.

The court has ordered him to make a formal bail application while the matter has been adjourned to today.
