Bail denied for Matadigo who is linked to alleged 4.7kg methamphetamine importation

Bail has been denied for 36-year-old Alipate Matadigo, who is charged in connection with the alleged importation of 4.7 kilograms of methamphetamine in September this year.

Matadigo is charged with one count of unlawful transportation of illicit drugs.

He appeared before Suva Magistrate Charles Ratakele this morning.

He is believed to be linked to two police officers who are already facing charges of unlawful possession of illicit drugs, unlawful importation, and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

While delivering the bail ruling, Magistrate Ratakele stressed that, given the seriousness of the allegations, the court must prioritise public safety.

Matadigo wanted to seek medical assistance, however, the Magistrate informed him that medical services are available at the remand centre, and referrals to the hospital can be arranged if needed.

The matter has been adjourned to this Friday
