Concerns continue to mount over the alleged discharge of waste from Tavua Hospital into the Nasivi River, as no findings have been released by the Water Authority of Fiji regarding their investigation.
During the Fijian Media Association Tavua town hall meeting held on 15th October, the Chair of the Landowning Unit for Tavua, Tevita Ralulu, alleged that the hospital has been discharging waste into the river.
Ralulu said the pollution is affecting nearby villagers who rely on Nasivi River for daily use.
When first approached about the issue, WAF Chief Executive Officer Seru Soderberg confirmed that a team had been dispatched to conduct water quality tests on 16th October, with results expected to be available by Wednesday, 22nd October.
However, fijivillage News has been following up, and no report has been received.
When questioned, Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau said he had not received any update or official report of the findings from the Water Authority of Fiji and the Ministry of Health.
Meanwhile, Minister for Health Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu stated that he had been briefed on the issue but would need to provide further details after consulting with the relevant authorities.
The alleged waste discharge has raised health and environmental concerns among Tavua residents, particularly those living in villages along the Nasivi River, who depend on the waterway for washing, fishing, and other domestic purposes.
