Dentists and oral health practitioners play a crucial role in infection prevention and control, early detection of HIV-related oral manifestations, and the safe management of patients living with HIV/AIDS.
The Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa highlighted this at the Fiji Oral Health Association Annual Conference held at the Crowne Plaza in Nadi.
He says they must remain vigilant and uphold strict standards of sterilisation, cross-infection control, and universal precautions; not just for safety, but as part of their professional responsibility.
He also noted that the rising incidence of oral cancer in Fiji calls for early detection, regular screening, and stronger referral systems.
Ravunawa says the role of dentists and oral health practitioners in recognising early signs, including lesions, ulcers, or suspicious changes, can save lives.
He adds that as oral health professionals, they must see the patient as a whole person when they walk through the clinic doors, and not just a set of teeth.
He also thanked Colgate-Palmolive, one of the major sponsors, for their continued support of Fiji's oral health sector.
The Assistant Minister says they must also strengthen the collaboration and integration of oral health within Primary Health Care, ensuring that prevention and promotion reach every Fijian family.
