Are moves afoot to appoint a new Supervisor of Elections?

I made no complaint and didn’t say anything about firing anybody, I have sent many letters - Malimali

Chair of the Electoral Commission, Barbara Malimali and Acting Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa

Chair of the Electoral Commission, Barbara Malimali has rejected suggestions that she has asked for the removal of Acting Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa in a letter to the Constitutional Offices Commission.

Although there are some suggestions being made for former Electoral Commission Chair, Graham Leung to be appointed as the Supervisor of Elections, Malimali says she has not made any complaints against Mataiciwa.

However she says she has sent many letters to the Constitutional Offices Commission.

She has not revealed the contents of her latest letter.

Despite many attempts by fijivillage News, Prime Minister and Chair of the Constitutional Offices Commission, Sitiveni Rabuka has not made any comments however it is understood that the commission is supposed to sit this week.

Fiji Labour Party Leader and former Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry maintains to fijivillage News today that they believe from what has transpired that there are elements within government seeking to remove Mataiciwa.

He questions if it is because Mataiciwa has referred complaints lodged against some senior Cabinet Ministers to FICAC.

Chaudhry says this is despite a media statement from Prime Minister Rabuka on 27th January this year that the Constitutional Offices Commission had already decided on the substantive appointee and he could not see why the announcement was being delayed.

He says in response to the Prime Minister’s concern, the Attorney General had then explained that they were in the process of working out the terms and conditions of the post before making a formal announcement.

Mataiciwa is still awaiting that letter of confirmation some two months later.

We have also sent questions to Attorney General and member of the Constitutional Offices Commission, Siromi Turaga. He has emphasized to the media to trust the due process and confidentiality in terms of the administration of the commission.

Acting Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa is yet to make any comments.
