Major upgrade works have started at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva and according to the Suva City Council, all trees will remain unharmed.

The Acting Permanent Secretary for Local Government, Shaheen Ali says the development will feature a multipurpose state of the art podium and a modern cafe with roof top open space overlooking the Suva Harbour.

He says with WiFi connectivity and CCTV surveillance, the park will also be safe for visitors.

The Suva City Council says the roots of the iconic trees are also being rehabilitated to increase its life span.

Civil works started in January this year which also involves underground drainage upgrade.

The council is carrying out initial works and contractors for the remaining upgrade work is expected to be finalised later.

Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar had earlier said the Suva City Council has employed a professional arborist to ensure the heritage of Ratu Sukuna Park and its historic trees are preserved.
