Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro

All schools in the Northern Division will be closed today to allow families in affected areas sufficient time to clean up following the recent heavy rain and flash flooding.

Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro has confirmed that schools will reopen tomorrow, provided the weather conditions are favourable.

The Minister explains that following the latest Situation Report from the Ministry’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) today, while weather conditions across the Northern Division are gradually improving, many communities, particularly in flood-prone areas, are still managing the aftermath of flooding, debris, and accessibility issues.

The Ministry is reminding all Heads of Schools that if weather conditions worsen again tomorrow, they are empowered under the School Operating Procedures (SOP) to make attendance decisions based on the situation in their areas, and must keep the Minister and the Permanent Secretary for Education informed.

They say that schools across Viti Levu will remain open ; however, parents and guardians are advised to use their discretion in deciding whether to send their children to school, taking into account the safety of their children and unfavourable weather conditions.

They also say they will continue to work closely with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDMO) and the Divisional Emergency Operations Centre, and further updates will be provided should conditions change.
