Over 30 students from the USP's Accounting, Finance, Economic, and Studies Association (AFESA) collaborated with the World Wide Fund Pacific Volunteers Program (WWF) in a cleaning-up campaign at the Suva foreshore.

President of the Worldwide Fund Pacific Volunteers Program, Mikaele Finau shared the purpose of this campaign is to support the Ministry of the Environment in organizing a National Anti-litter campaign.

Finau acknowledged the collaboration of USP in yesterday’s activity.

He says it is important to raise such volunteer organizations in the fight against the waste crisis and many other matters in Fiji.

President of the USP Accounting, Finance, Economic, and Studies Association Deevnesh Chand says the association is influencing students in voluntary activities, with the purpose of gaining experience.

Mikaele Finau and Deevnesh Chand highlighted that the most rubbish collected were beer bottles, needles, garbage bags, plastic materials, bottles, plastic in the ocean, syringes and more.

Finau and Chand echo the need to keep Fiji clean and help save our marine life.

They add that this is a motivation to the youths in Fiji, to be the change Fiji needs.

They invite youths to join up in these types of campaigns.

Registration for the Worldwide Fund Pacific Volunteers Program begins in January and March of every year at the headquarters in Suva.

Finau says that the WWF Pacific Volunteers Program believes that youths are the leaders of today.

He shared that the Volunteers Program is a self-funded organization, and in one of their fundraising campaign, they were able to raise $3,000.

He says the next conservation activity will be in Vanuakula Village in Tavua next week.

He adds that some of the assistance they give freely is mangrove planting, coral restoration programs, deforestation, waste management issues, and the installation of trash racks.

This is all possible through the support of WWF Pacific.
