A 16-year-old student and a 60-year-old farmer have died after they were struck by lightning in two separate incidents.

The farmer was found lying motionless with a burnt smell from his body and torn shirt at his cassava farm in Keolaiya Settlement in Sabeto, Nadi on Thursday.

Police believe he was struck by lightning.

At around 5pm Saturday in the Mamanuca Waters, between Monu Island and Yanuya Island in the Malolo Group, a 16-year-old student of Yanuya Island, while returning from a picnic on a boat, died instantly after he was struck by lightning.

The body of the student is at the Lautoka Hospital mortuary, awaiting post-mortem.
