90 farmers have been recognised for excellence in agricultural production under the Star Farmer Incentive Programme, with top performers receiving platinum, gold and silver awards at this year’s Star Farmer Awards in Nadi.
Speaking at the event, British American Tobacco (BAT) Fiji General Manager James Golding says the awards mark the fifth year of the programme, which was launched in 2021 to improve farmer productivity and increase returns through the application of agronomy best practices.
Golding says the programme has significantly improved livelihoods for farmers, with participants benefiting from training, technical support and access to resources aimed at increasing crop yields and income.
Golding highlighted that British American Tobacco Fiji supports farmers through initiatives such as greenhouse seedling cultivation, land preparation assistance and ongoing field support, helping farmers manage challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions.
He notes that the growing participation of women in agriculture, with 31 women farmers making up more than 30 percent of this year’s award recipients.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who officiated at the event, commended the partnership between the private sector and farmers, saying such collaborations are key to strengthening Fiji’s agriculture sector.
Rabuka says agriculture remains a cornerstone of Fiji’s development, providing food security, employment and livelihoods for many people, particularly in rural areas.
He adds that programmes like the Star Farmer Initiative demonstrate how investment in farmers can boost productivity, increase incomes and contribute to national economic growth.
The Prime Minister also reiterated Government’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a modern, resilient and competitive sector that supports economic diversification, job creation and sustainable development.
Rabuka says strengthening partnerships between Government, the private sector and rural communities will be critical in building a stronger and more inclusive economy for Fiji.
