A 6-year-old child has died following a motor vehicle accident along Noco Road yesterday morning.

Police say the child had accompanied his father to buy bread, and they were offered a ride home by a 29-year-old driver.

While travelling near the Nabitu junction, it is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road.

The child sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Wainibokasi Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.

Police say the driver was taken into custody as he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The victim’s father and another passenger did not sustain any injuries.

Investigations into the incident continues.

The road death toll now stands at 10 compared to 3 for the same period last year.

Police say the tragedy is another reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving, which can destroy lives and devastate families, and also puts other innocent road users at risk.
