54 percent of our population are 30 years and younger, and we have a majority population of coup-babies.

Those are the words of Governance Specialist Emele Duituturaga while speaking at the Fiji’s Constitution Review – Building Trust and Legitimacy discussion organised by Dialogue Fiji at the Suva Civic Centre.

She says educating the public, especially young people, on the constitution is key to a successful constitutional amendment.

Duituturaga says what is really important in the public participation process is some kind of civic education, such as what a constitution is and what democracy is.

She adds that young people are not interested in this if they are not aware.

Duituturaga says we have to push to make sure the constitutional review is not a quick dash towards an election.

She says there has to be wide participation from different genders, religions, and also rural communities.
