53-year-old man dies in Savusavu accident while drunk driver is in police custody

A 53-year-old man from Savusavu has died following an accident at Savarekareka, along the Transinsular road in Savusavu this morning.

Police Director Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police SSP Mitieli Divuana says the incident occurred around 01.30am after a 56-year-old man allegedly lost control of the vehicle he was driving while negotiating a bend and veered off the road.

He says the driver was travelling with 6 passengers towards Nabalebale village from Savusavu Town when the accident happened.

SSP Divuana says all occupants of the vehicle were conveyed to the Savusavu hospital, where they were treated and sent home with minor injuries, but the 53-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival.

He says the driver who was also intoxicated was arrested and is currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
