A 46-year-old farmer of Vivili Village, Savusavu, who was hit by a vehicle coming from the opposite direction as he was walking along Naidi, Buca Bay Road has passed away.

He has become the first person who has died in an accident this year.

Fiji Police Force Director of Traffic Control, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, says the incident was unfortunate and the victim died on the spot.

Divuana says it is unfortunate because children will start the new school year tomorrow, and drivers will need to consider the thousands of students who will be using our roads.

He says people can expect massive movements on our roads tomorrow, especially in the morning and in the afternoon.

Police are calling on everyone to be cautious while on the road if you are traveling in the bus, taxi, or even as a pedestrian on the road, please exercise safety at times.

The driver of the vehicle is in Police custody as the investigation is underway.
