Out of the 67 people who died on roads this year, 40 deaths were caused by speeding.
According to the Fiji Police Force, seven fatal crashes were caused by careless driving, while six fatal crashes resulted from improper overtaking.
The Land Transport Authority says it is working with the Police and will continue to strengthen joint road safety enforcement operations for the 2025–2026 festive season, a period when traffic volumes and movement are expected to increase.
The LTA says the operations will run from 1 October 2025 to 31 January 2026, targeting speeding, reckless and dangerous driving, drink-driving, overloading, and other high-risk behaviours, including pedestrian safety issues that contribute to serious crashes during the holiday period.
They say specific measures include increased traffic enforcement and speed monitoring along highways and busy corridors, overloading control for buses, minibuses, and trucks to ensure passenger and cargo safety, compliance with traffic regulations, and targeted road safety awareness campaigns in communities, schools, and transport hubs.
Both the LTA and the Police are urging all road users to take responsibility for road safety by obeying traffic laws, exercising patience, and watching out for vulnerable road users, particularly road users, children, and the elderly.
Everyone is also reminded to remain vigilant when crossing roads or walking along roadways, especially during peak festive travel periods.
