Labasa Town commuters and businesses will now be able to access more organized and better parking after the installation of 4 new electric parking meters which will also increase income generation for the Labasa Town Council.

While officiating at the event, Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa says these meters were purchased by the Labasa Town Council at around $55,000 and each parking meter can accommodate eight spots.

He says Labasa Town has been expanding with development happening at a rapid rate, therefore, the digital system introduced is focused to modernise cities and towns.

Nalumisa says the new meters will make businesses efficient and better equip the enforcement agencies in controlling parking within the Central Business District areas as the municipalities have been working towards self-sufficiency through capital projects, so that they do not have to rely heavily on government funding.

He says the Council is expected to make more income from such investment and improve on its services to upgrade the existing car parks and work on major capital development as more capital projects will mean more funds for the Council that will promote self-sufficiency and sustainability.

The Minister adds that this project would be happening in phases and more meters are expected in the future.

The Minister also toured the town to assess the damages done by a major fire to seven businesses, earlier this week.
