3 youths accused of robbing and killing elderly beggar remanded in custody

Onisivoro Qaqa Ratumaivalelevu, Roko Tuibabasiga and Samisoni Rakoa

Three youths who allegedly assaulted a 68-year-old beggar to death and stole his money to buy liquor have been remanded in custody by the Labasa Magistrates Court.

20-year-old farmer from Draladamu, Wainikoro, Onisivoro Qaqa Ratumaivalelevu, 22-year-old Samisoni Rakoa and 22-year-old farmer from Nasasa Village, Roko Tuibabasiga are charged with one count of murder.

Police say the case stems from a report received on the 23rd of this month, regarding the discovery of the elderly man’s body just two metres from his home.

They further say the deceased was known for begging and often carrying a box of coins who was reportedly assaulted and robbed by the accused youths.

Police investigations led to the arrest of the trio after one of the youths was found using loose coins to buy alcohol at a nearby shop.

The matter will be called in the Labasa High Court on the 11th of next month.
