The Land Transport Authority has issued a stark warning to all road users following alarming statistics that show a rise in drunk-driving incidents during the festive season.
LTA says as of December 10, 2025, there have been three fatal accidents involving intoxicated pedestrians, underscoring that alcohol-related risks on our roads extend far beyond drivers alone.
Between November and December 2025, a staggering 261 drivers have been arrested and charged by the Fiji Police Force for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa condemned the reckless behaviour contributing to these incidents, describing the figures as deeply concerning and completely unacceptable.
He stresses that drink-driving continues to be a leading cause of serious crashes and fatalities, despite extensive public awareness campaigns, enforcement operations, and repeated warnings.
He says these incidents leave permanent scars on families and loved ones, and that life is precious, and no celebration, no gathering, and no moment of convenience is worth a human life.
Rokosawa emphasised that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not a mere lapse in judgment, but a reckless act that endangers everyone on the road.
He further highlighted that those who drink and drive will be held accountable for their actions.
With the festive season typically marked by increased travel, social events, and alcohol consumption, Rokosawa is caling on all road users to take extra responsibility for their actions, as traffic volumes are expected to increase significantly in the coming days.
He is urging drivers to plan ahead, designate sober drivers, use alternative transport options, and never get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.
He is also urging pedestrians to avoid walking on roads while intoxicated and remain visible at night, while passengers should speak up if they are being asked to travel with a driver under the influence.
Rokowasa acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the LTA staff, Fiji Police Force, and road safety stakeholders, who continue to conduct enforcement operations and educational campaigns aimed at reducing accidents during the festive period.
