24 cane farmers in the Western Division have received the New Farmers and Lease Premium Grant under the Government’s New Farmers and Lease Premium Assistance Programme, marking the latest effort to boost Fiji’s sugar industry.
The Ministry of Sugar Industry says this handover brings the total number of beneficiaries nationwide to 563 and represents a $2.6 million Government investment aimed at strengthening Fiji’s sugar sector.
Among the recipients was 39-year-old sugarcane farmer Penisoni Seru from the Malau Sector in Rakiraki, who received a grant of $761.82 to purchase essential tools and expand his cane fields.
Seru, who began cane farming just two years ago, has produced 20 tonnes in 2024 and is now on track to increase his yield to 50 tonnes in 2025.
He says that despite his determination, he often struggled as a new farmer due to a lack of farming tools and equipment.
He adds that most of the time, he had to borrow tools from his neighbours just to get the work done.
While handing over the grants, Minister for Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh highlighted the Government’s ongoing commitment to revitalising the sugar industry and empowering sugarcane farmers.
He says the New Farmers and Lease Premium Assistance Programme strengthens Fiji’s sugarcane base, empowers new growers, and ensures that more families have the opportunity to succeed in this vital industry.
He also acknowledged the progress made and the work that still lies ahead.
The Minister says the sugar industry is once again moving forward.
He adds that, with Government support, industry partnerships, and the dedication of growers, they are rebuilding confidence, restoring productivity, and securing a stronger, more prosperous future for all Fijians.
