It’s a sad day today for 22 people who have been left homeless after a fire destroyed two houses in Sele Road in Caubati.

The National Fire Authority says an investigation is expected to take place tomorrow to determine the probable cause of the fire.

NFA CEO Puamau Sowane says being displaced by a fire is always a sad occurrence and he has cautioned homeowners and families to exercise fire safety awareness and prevention in their homes.

Sowane further says it’s fortunate that no one was hurt in the fire.

The NFA says on-site investigations found that 1 house was occupied by 17 people and the other by 5 people and at 11.12am the duty officer on scene reported that the fire had been extinguished, but 2 wooden houses had sustained more than 95 percent structural damage.

They say the on-duty crew at Valelevu Fire Station responded immediately and after arriving at the scene at 10.04am, they noticed a house fully engulfed in flames.

NFA says the Suva Fire Station also provided support with the 20,000-litre tanker and 4 men crew and an ambulance with a 4 men crew, which arrived at 10.13am.
