Veresa Draunimasi in Labasa court

The 19-year-old student who allegedly assaulted a 49-year-old man to death in Naodamu, Labasa has been remanded in custody by Labasa Magistrate Amelia Korodrau this afternoon.

Veresa Draunimasi, who is a student of Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute, is charged with a count of manslaughter.

Police had earlier confirmed that CCTV footage confirmed that the deceased and Draunimasi were allegedly in a drinking party inside a nightclub the previous night and shows that the 19-year-old was following the man after the club closed.

They say witness statements had revealed that the accused had allegedly later assaulted him at a known drinking spot, and his body was discovered the next morning.

The matter has been transferred to Labasa High Court and will be called next Friday.
