A 19-year-old student of Labasa has been charged with manslaughter.

This is after a 49-year-old man was found lying motionless at a vacant land in Naodamu, Labasa on the 19th of this month.

Police say the cause of death has revealed that the deceased had been assaulted, and an investigation was underway to trace his last movements.

They say CCTV footage confirmed that the deceased and the accused were in a drinking party inside a nightclub the previous night and shows that the 19-year-old was following the man after the club closed.

Police say witness statements had revealed that the accused had later assaulted him at a known drinking spot, and his body was discovered the next morning.

The student has been charged with one count of manslaughter, contrary to Section 239(a)(b)(c)(i)(ii) of the Crimes Act of 2009.

He will appear in the Labasa Magistrates Court today.
