1553 people from Nadi and Lautoka will today receive their new taxi permits.
While officiating at the Taxi Permit Barrel Draw for Nadi 1, Nadi 2, and Lautoka 1 Transport Zones Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum urged those who have received their permits today to ensure that the service which is delivered to their customers is done in a very professional manner.
He adds that the choice of travelling in a taxi is a choice of the individual member of the public and the Attorney General reemphasized the importance of serving the people in the different quotas for which their permits have been issued.
Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted that following the review of applications by the Taxi Permit Independent Review Committee, a total of 2,536 applications met the criteria and qualified for the barrel draw today.
However, he says that LTA with the Taxi Permit Independent Review Committee has looked to improve the system and service and have came up with a quota system.
Sayed-Khaiyum clarified that the size of the population in an area will determine the number of taxis’ servicing that area.
LTA has confirmed to Fijivillage that 358 permits will serve the Nadi 1 transport Zone, 162 permits in the Nadi 2 Zone and 1,033 in the Lautoka 1 Zone.
The Attorney General says the new system with specific criteria for taxi permits and introduction of zones brings about transparency and modernisation in the industry.
Sayed-Kaiyum adds that the system is also empowering, as priority is given to people from low income families.
