1,500 homes were destroyed while 6,000 homes were partially damaged by Cyclone Yasa in the Northern Division.

This has been confirmed by the Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima who says they completed their initial damage assessments yesterday.

Rainima says they received 22,000 ration packs and have distributed them to evacuation centres in the red zone areas.

He says they are now moving to individual homes that have been badly affected as well.

Rainima says they have deployed RFMF personnel to carry out fast fixes on Kia Island so families have a roof over their head to protect them from the adverse weather conditions we are currently experiencing.

He says they will carry out the same in other islands in the Northern Division.

Rainima says 80 evacuation centres are currently active and 68 of these are schools.

He says they are targeting to handover these schools to the Ministry of Education by the 11th of next month.

The new school year starts on the 18th of next month.
