Vanuatu’s Ministry of Health has recorded 14 people living with HIV over the past five years, with most cases reportedly linked to expatriates.
HIV Unit Manager Florida Toa says the available figures do not clearly indicate whether infections are rising or falling, as testing remains limited to specific groups.
The Vanuatu Daily Post reports that expanded testing is needed to better understand the true prevalence of HIV, particularly among students studying overseas and seasonal workers, who may be at higher risk.
Director General of Health, Shirley Tokon also raised concerns about Fiji’s rising HIV rates, saying the trend could pose a wider threat to the Pacific region.
Vanuatu’s Ministry of Health is now working with Fiji’s Health Ministry for technical advice and support, while focusing locally on prevention, awareness campaigns, and promoting safe sexual practices.
