12 men charged for violent Monday night attack on Nakelo family remanded in custody

Twelve men have been remanded in custody by the Nausori Magistrates Court for their alleged involvement in the violent attack against a family in Nakelo in Tailevu on Monday night.

Seven days has been given to defence lawyer John Rabuku of Law Solutions to file formal bail applications.

While arguing for bail today, Rabuku told the court that the case arose out of a group of divers.

He said certain females alleged that they had been treated badly and cat called by those divers.

Rabuku told the court that the alleged escalating treatment of the women resulted in a confrontation on Sunday and Monday.

The defence lawyer said his clients were simple villagers and this is not gang violence.

He also stated that attempts to reconcile have already been made.

The Police prosecution objected to bail saying it was in the interest of the community and for the protection of the 12 men.

A decision on bail will be delivered on 3rd November.

The 12 men have been charged with various offences including Malicious Act, Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm, Damaging Property and Criminal Trespass.

A video of the incident is being widely circulated on social media.

It shows a group of more than 20 men allegedly entering the bottom flat of a two-storey house and assaulting some of the occupants.

Some of the men in the house can be heard screaming for help while a woman can be heard screaming for her baby.

The video shows a broken down door, shattered glass on the floor and other parts of the house trashed.
